Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)
Laser Vision Correction
Since the 1970's refractive surgery, known as Radial Keratotomy (RK), has been used to treat mild myopia or nearsightedness and astigmatism, allowing patients to experience a lifestyle free from dependency on glasses or contact lenses. With the introduction of the excimer laser, the procedure known as excimer Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) expands this potential freedom from corrective eyewear to approximately 25% of the population. LASIK is a combination of the use of the excimer laser system with the refractive procedure known as Lamellar Keratoplasty (LK). The LASIK procedure is able to treat low to high levels of refractive error.

Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)
| LASIK changes the shape of the cornea to improve the refraction or focus of light by the eye. This is accomplished by using the accuracy and precision of the excimer laser. A thin layer of the cornea is lifted up with an instrument known as a microkeratome. Then, in less than 2 minutes, pulses of ultraviolet light from the excimer laser reshape the internal cornea with accuracy within .25 microns, which is thinner than a human hair. High levels of nearsightedness and moderate amounts of farsightedness and astigmatism can be treated by adjusting the pattern of the laser beam. | ![]() |

| After reshaping the tissue with the excimer laser, the thin layer of the cornea or corneal cap is replaced in its original position. Sutures are not required because of the cornea's natural bonding and rapid healing abilities. This procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure and is performed in less than 30 minutes. An eye drop anesthesia is used and for most patients the slight, postoperative discomfort is eliminated with medications. Dramatic improvement in vision within the first day is reported by many of our patients. Others may experience some blurring and fluctuating vision for several weeks. Most patients can return to normal routines within a day or two. |
Is LASIK For You?

- You have myopia , hyperopia or astigmatism that is stable and non-progressive. (If you have not had a significant change in your prescription in the last 12 months).
